Introducing, the 2018 Rockshox Pike.
When you make a fork as good as the last Pike, it can be a tall order to improve on it. However, Rockshox has gone back to the drawing board and done just that with a multitude of small tweaks adding up to a more refined ride. While the old Pike ended up covering everything from XC to hardcore all mountain, the 2018 Pike is really designed as a Trail/Enduro fork.
External Rebound - Dial in the perfect recoil speed easily accessible on the bottom of the fork.
Low Speed Compression - Perfect for fine tuning.
3 - Position Open/Pedal/Firm - On the fly adjustment lever to suit any trail, up or down.
Air Spring - Get the perfect spring rate in no time.
The Charger 2 Damper is the latest iteration of Rockshox's most advanced damper. There are still 3 distinct levels of compression, however, all have been worked on. Improvements include:
Open mode - Receives a wider low speed compression range - this is perfect for fine tuning your fork to ride exactly as you'd like while your smashing your way down the trail.
The pedal setting has been optimised - This gives a more useable range and is perfect for smooth, flowy trails with more support but still better bump absorption.
The firm setting has been completely re-tuned - to provide a firmer feel, but more consistent "blow off" if you do hit some rough stuff. This is great for those that like to climb out of the saddle.
The lever to adjust these settings is also significantly easier to turn than its predecessor. When it comes time to service or bleed the Charger2 damper, it's a much simpler affair. The entire damper is now removable without needing to touch any of your adjustments. Smart.
Rapid recovery that keeps the fork riding high in its travel and always ready for the next bump remains.
The introduction of Debonair is a new addition to the Pike. This increases the negative air spring size which gives drastically improved small bump and "off the top" plushness. Debonair also helps to increase support in the middle of the stroke.
With the 2018 fork being made only for Boost spacing, Rockshox were able to completely optimise the chassis for this. The tough hollow forged alloy crown and 35mm Fast black upper tubes remain, but the big changes include:
Huge tyre clearance - Both the 27.5 and the 29er will now happily accept 2.8" tyres. The 29er will take 27.5x3.0" tyres.
180mm Post Mount - Let's face it, everyone running a Pike is running at least 180mm rotors, so Rockshox have made that the standard.
Stealth Axle - Gone is the quick release style Maxle Ultimate, the 2018 Pike now comes with a Maxle Stealth for cleaner looks and less weight.
The Air Pressure recommendations label on the back of the fork have been reworked and are now extremely accurate making setup a breeze.
All up, the 2018 Rockshox Pike is a masterpiece. The benchmark has just been lifted.
